The Reverend Robert Walker is the ideal Olympic candidate: a brilliant amateur and founding member of the Edinburgh Skating Club. Raeburn's most famous painting shows Walker sweeping across Duddingston Loch on one leg – absolutely still, yet in full motion. It is the portrait in action. The figure cuts a dark diagonal through the cold grey light, his blades engraving criss-cross lines in the ice, perfectly imitated in paint. Walker was also a member (and chaplain) of the Royal Company of Archers.
